Anchorage man faces charges for accidentally shooting himself in the leg inside downtown bar

An Anchorage man faces criminal charges after he accidentally shot himself in the leg twice at a downtown bar early Sunday morning.

Police were called to the PlayHouse bar at 333 W. Fourth Ave. just before 2:15 a.m. Sunday after a caller reported that shots had been fired near the entrance of the club, the Anchorage Police Department wrote in a news release Sunday.

Officers found 30-year-old Andrew Abellanosa "on the floor of the entry of the bar with gunshot wounds to his leg and he was bleeding profusely," the news release said.

Abellanosa had "brandished a gun" during a dispute at the bar and had accidentally shot himself, police said.

Officers used a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and medics took Abellanosa to the hospital, where he was in stable condition, according to police.

Police wrote that "a warrant for (Abellanosa's) arrest has been obtained on charges of assault, misconduct involving a weapon and reckless endangerment."

In a public Facebook post, PlayHouse staff wrote that the man had been stopped at the entrance for a pat-down when "security identified he had a gun on him."

Court records show Abellanosa faces three charges of third-degree felony assault, or "causing fear of injury with a weapon," along with misdemeanor weapons misconduct and reckless endangerment charges.

He appears to have no other Alaska criminal record beyond a pair of driving citations.

When Abellanosa is released from the hospital he'll be taken to the Anchorage jail, police said.
