Anchorage police: Accident sends 4 pedestrians to the hospital, closes downtown roads

Police are investigating a crash near downtown Anchorage involving two vehicles and four hospitalized pedestrians.

The police department said in a statement the conditions of the injured pedestrians are unknown.

Third Avenue was shut down at Post Road for several blocks, and Karluk Street was closed between Third and Fourth avenues. The roads were re-opened late Wednesday night.

Officers responded to reports of the accident near Bean's Cafe around 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

"Initial indications are that two vehicles were headed westbound on Third Avenue, approaching Karluk, when they struck a total of four pedestrians in the roadway," police said.

One of the vehicles hit three people, and the other vehicle struck one person. All of the pedestrians were taken to the hospital.

The investigation is just beginning and it is unclear who may be at fault for the accident, police said.

Both drivers stayed at the scene and spoke with officers.
