Taxi struck 3 pedestrians crossing the street near Bean's Cafe, police say

Anchorage police reported Thursday that a taxi struck three pedestrians walking across the street near Bean's Cafe on Wednesday evening.

The taxi was headed westbound on Third Avenue near Karluk Street when it collided with two men and a woman, the police department said in a statement.

"The pedestrians began crossing the street inside the marked crosswalk, and then began to veer out of the crosswalk when they were struck," police said.

Several roads in the area were closed while officers examined the scene.

All three of the pedestrians were taken to a local hospital, where they remain in serious condition but are expected to survive, police said.

The Police Department is continuing to investigate what happened.

No arrests have been made and no citations have been issued. The involvement of drugs or alcohol by those injured will not be known until toxicology reports are completed, police said.

A fourth victim was injured by a second vehicle, police reported.

That individual ran toward the scene of the collision just after it occurred and ran into the side of a car exiting the Bean's Cafe parking lot, police said. The pedestrian was at fault in that accident and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital.
