Anchorage police take credit union robbery suspect into custody

With help from a watchful bystander, Anchorage police have taken into custody a suspect in a Midtown credit union robbery Saturday, officials said.

According to an Anchorage Police Department release, a robbery was reported around noon Saturday at the Alaska USA Federal Credit Union in the Fred Meyer on Northern Lights Boulevard.

Police were told that a man had given a note demanding money to the teller, the release said.

After receiving the money, the man fled, heading west, police said. During a search at The Mall at Sears, a bystander who had been in the credit union at the time of the robbery alerted officers to the suspect at the mall, according to the release.

The suspect matched the description of the man involved in the credit union robbery and "was taken into custody without incident," police said.

Police said they will release the suspect's identity after charges are filed. No injuries were reported, according to police.

The robbery is still under investigation, police said.

Editor's note: This story incorrectly named Alaska USA as a bank instead of a credit union.
