Anchorage man arrested in September standoff wanted again by police

A man arrested on assault charges after a September standoff, then allowed to drive away from an October confrontation with officers in South Anchorage, is again being sought by police.

Joseph Paul Szajkowski, 30, is considered "armed and dangerous," according to a Tuesday statement from Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Renee Oistad. He is wanted on two arrest warrants for failure to appear during open felony cases against him from last year in Anchorage and Palmer. The Anchorage standoff case involved two counts of assault, while the Palmer case includes theft and weapons-misconduct charges.

Oistad didn't have word Tuesday on when or where Szajkowski had last been seen by police.

A statewide inmate database listed Szajkowski as released on bond since Dec. 31. Court records from the Palmer case, on charges of theft and misconduct involving weapons, indicate that Szajkowski failed to appear at a Jan. 20 hearing.

Police had taken Szajkowski into custody from a home on Misty Springs Court, off Dowling Road, on Sept. 22 after a 12-hour standoff there. Police said a woman reported that her daughter, Szajkowski's "significant other," had been assaulted by him; officers negotiated with Szajkowski but ultimately broke down the front door, prompting his surrender.

APD again encountered Szajkowski on the night of Oct. 5 in a car that had been reported as a suspicious vehicle on West 88th Avenue in the Jewel Lake area. After pursuing the vehicle east along Dimond Boulevard and pulling it over at the southbound Minnesota Drive on-ramp, officers reported seeing a gun inside; negotiators spent three hours talking to Szajkowski but he was allowed to leave after prosecutors decided there wasn't probable cause to support an arrest.

Szajkowski is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, weighs 190 pounds and has blond hair and blue eyes. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call either APD at 907-786-8900 or Anchorage Crime Stoppers at 907-561-STOP. Crime Stoppers can also be contacted through its website.
