Anchorage man stabbed after request for cigarette, charges say

An attempt to bum a smoke led to a man's brutal stabbing Friday night in Mountain View, sending the victim to the hospital and landing the suspect in jail, according to charging documents.

Dalon Joshua White, 22, is charged with first-degree assault in the stabbing at the Red Apple grocery store on Mountain View Drive, according to court documents. Anchorage police were called to the store for an armed assault at about 10:15 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses told police White and another man approached the victim, identified in charging documents as Keith Jackson, and White asked him for a cigarette – but Jackson didn't have one.

"A fistfight broke out," prosecutors wrote. "(White) drew a hunting knife, 10-12 inches (long) with a very sharp 6-7 inch blade. The defendant stabbed the victim multiple times in the stomach and chest."

Jackson was taken to the hospital, where prosecutors said he required a chest tube and a blood transfusion during treatment.

Police arrested White at the scene and questioned him. According to the charging document, White said Jackson had asked him for a cigarette and then attacked him, and that the stabbing was in self-defense.

"The defendant then changed his story," prosecutors wrote. "Now, the defendant said that the victim pulled a knife on the defendant and almost cut the defendant on the face. The (officers) did not find a knife on the victim."

Prosecutors said White was still on probation from a 2015 disorderly conduct case.

White was arraigned Saturday, with his bail set at $17,000 and a court-approved third-party custodian required for his release. He remained in custody Tuesday morning at the Anchorage Correctional Complex, according to a statewide inmate database.
