Man wounded, suspects at large in Spenard shooting

A man was shot twice early Monday on a road in Spenard, where a suspect in a car opened fire after demanding the victim's cellphone, Anchorage police said.

Officers responded at 4:45 a.m. to the 3900 block of Barbara Street, Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Renee Oistad said, where they found the victim kneeling in the street with gunshot wounds to his knee and torso. The victim told police that he had been on foot when a dark-colored sedan pulled up beside him.

"The Samoan male driver demanded the victim's cellphone," Oistad wrote in a statement. "When the victim did not give it to him, the rear passenger shot him twice. The victim stated he did not know any of the three people in the car and had no further description."

Oistad said that the second passenger had been in the front seat, but she didn't have word on what direction the sedan was headed when it was last seen.

Monday's shooting is similar to another in the early morning hours of April 4 on Mountain View Drive. The victim in that case, who was shot in the torso, told investigators he had been shot by a "Samoan male" passenger who got out of a red sedan and demanded his possessions. Witnesses to the Friday shooting told police they had seen a vehicle being driven away from the scene; police said that case may have been drug-related.

Oistad did not have word on whether Monday's shooting in Spenard was linked to the Mountain View case from last week.

Anyone with information on any of the shootings should call Anchorage police at 907-786-8900.
