Juneau beach stabbing suspect now in custody

A Juneau man sought in a beach party stabbing last month, which sent another man to a Seattle hospital with serious injuries, is behind bars.

Joshua Levi Brown, 37, was arrested on a first-degree assault charge in the April 22 case just before noon Thursday, police Lt. Kris Sell said in a statement.

"JPD officers responded to a residence in the 6500 block of Glacier Highway after receiving a tip Brown was there," Sell wrote.

Investigators had identified Brown last week as a suspect in the stabbing, which took place at a bonfire party on Thane Road, telling the public he was "extremely dangerous." The victim had been stabbed in the abdomen after an argument near the party, receiving abdominal wounds for which he was treated at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

According to charges filed against Brown, a witness told police the stabbing victim, Monte Nix, was drunk, "acting belligerent" and throwing sand during the beach party.

Other witnesses said Brown was the aggressor in the altercation, and the two men had problems prior to the beach party at a "4/20 event," the charges say.

Jacob Mulloy, one of the interviewed witnesses, said the fight moved from the beach to the parking lot, behind some vehicles.

"Then Mulloy heard the sound of a faucet opening up. Mulloy turned on his phone flashlight, and saw blood pouring out of (Nix)," the charges say.

Nix later told investigators at the Seattle hospital that he did not remember anything that happened. "He was told he had a confrontation with another person and was stabbed three times with an eight-inch box cutting knife. When he woke up he was in the hospital," the charges say.

A nurse who treated Nix described his extensive injuries: The knife had gone through his stomach and spleen, and into his pancreas. Surgeons removed part of his spleen and pancreas, she told police.

Brown was taken Thursday to the Lemon Creek Correctional Center, where he was held on $20,000 bail. According to the charges, Brown has warrants in Oregon and Washington.
