Anchorage gallery loses thousands of dollars in burglary

Dos Manos Gallery on West Northern Lights Boulevard in Midtown was robbed on Monday night.

Gallery owner Kara Kirkpatrick said at least $5,000 in cash and merchandise were stolen. Missing items include three copper cuff bracelets, several rings, a vintage suitcase and more than 20 lighters.

Kirkpatrick said all of her own jewelry-making supplies, some unsent bills in envelopes and gallery sales sheets were also taken.

She called police on Tuesday morning shortly after arriving at the gallery. Police determined that the burglar had entered the gallery with a crowbar.

Kirkpatrick closed the gallery Tuesday and Wednesday to clean up and take inventory. Dos Manos has been in business for 11 years, and Kirkpatrick said it had never been robbed before this week.

"I don't want any of my artists to feel like their stuff isn't safe here," Kirkpatrick said. "This (gallery) is my heart and soul. I work so hard to make this place somewhere that feels good for people to come in and shop, and some person comes in and takes what they want just because they can. It's just so upsetting."
