Troopers: Nome man charged with DUI, manslaughter for rollover that killed toddler

Nome resident James Bloomstrand, 37, has been charged with DUI and manslaughter following a Sunday rollover accident in Teller that killed an 18-month-old child, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers reported the fatal incident in a dispatch posted earlier this week. That initial report said the toddler, a boy, "was ejected from a vehicle during a rollover."

"The child died as a result of his injuries," troopers said, adding that the driver was injured and was taken to a nearby hospital. The driver was not identified at that time. Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said, when asked for more details, that the crash was still being investigated.

On Friday, troopers identified Bloomstrand as the driver in the wreck. An online dispatch said he was charged at the conclusion of an investigation.

Bloomstrand was arrested in Anchorage and jailed there. He is set to make his next court appearance in Nome on Thursday.
