Treasurer for youth hockey organization accused of stealing $180K

The volunteer treasurer for the Mustang Hockey Association has been charged with stealing about $180,000 from the youth hockey organization, according to Anchorage police.

Jennifer Suchan, 33, allegedly stole the funds out of the general account of the volunteer-run hockey association, which is based in the Eagle River-Chugiak area, police said in a statement.

Court records show Suchan has been charged with two felonies: first-degree theft and scheme to defraud.

A member of Mustang Hockey noticed several unauthorized cash withdrawals from the account while reviewing bank records on June 19, police said.

That discovery prompted the Mustang member to go back through past account statements, and they discovered Suchan was withdrawing the money, as well as cashing checks from the account, police said.

An investigation found that Suchan's thefts happened from August 2015 to June 2017, police said.

"Initial indications are that Suchan was using the money to pay off personal bills," they said.

Mustang Hockey's president could not be reached immediately for comment.

On Monday, officers arrested Suchan and took her to the Anchorage Correctional Complex.
