Savoonga man charged with manslaughter after mother’s ATV rollover death

A Savoonga man has been arrested and charged with manslaughter after his mother died as the result of an ATV accident earlier this month, Alaska State Troopers said on Friday.

On July 8, Felix Wongittilin was driving his ATV in Savoonga with his mother, Mary Anna Kulowiyi, as a passenger, troopers said in a dispatch posted to their website.

"According to witnesses, the ATV flipped, coming to rest in the gravel intersection," the dispatch said.

Wongittilin and Kulowiyi were both transported out of Savoonga for medical treatment, troopers said. Kulowiyi had severe injuries and was transported to Anchorage.

She later died as a result of her injuries, troopers said.

Wongittilin was intoxicated at the time, troopers said. His injuries were not life-threatening.

After being arrested in Savoonga on Wednesday, Wongittilin was remanded to the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center in Nome on $25,000 bail, troopers said.
