Search underway for 2 men who escaped from Bethel jail

Two men have escaped from the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center in Bethel, the Alaska Department of Corrections said Saturday.

The corrections department, Alaska State Troopers and Bethel Police Department are searching for Wilson Teddy Beaver, 43, and Carl J. Konig, 31. The two escaped from the jail between 10 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, corrections department spokeswoman Megan Edge said in an email.

"The details of their escape are still under investigation," she said.

Beaver had been in custody at YKCC since September on charges of burglary, first-degree attempted sexual assault and third-degree assault, Edge said. Konig had been there since April on charges of second-degree and third-degree assault, and charges for a probation violation for a felony, she said. The men have not been sentenced, Edge said.

The corrections department is asking people with information about the men's whereabouts to contact Alaska State Troopers in Bethel at 907-543-2294, or Bethel police at 907-543-3781, or call 911.
