3 Alaskans charged with conspiracy to smuggle heroin into Mat-Su prison

Three Alaskans were charged in federal court Thursday for a 2016 conspiracy to smuggle heroin into Goose Creek Correctional Center in Point MacKenzie, according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Alaska.

Prosecutors allege that on April 8, 2016, Heaven Leigh Erick, 28, passed heroin to Spencer Daniel Johnson, 24, while he was incarcerated at Goose Creek. Three days later, nearly 20 grams of heroin was seized from Johnson, who prosecutors say intended to distribute the heroin in the prison.

Kalani Lemauga Maalona, 31, was also named in the conspiracy charges, although Maalona's role was not explained in the release. Maalona was also incarcerated at Goose Creek when the heroin was smuggled in, prosecutors say.

All three were charged with drug conspiracy. Johnson was also charged with possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance. They are all currently incarcerated on unrelated state charges, the U.S. District Attorney's Office wrote.

The FBI conducted the investigation, with help from the Alaska Department of Corrections and Alaska State Troopers Western Alaska Alcohol and Narcotics Team.
