Anchorage man who scuffled with police faces several charges

A man seen speeding through downtown Anchorage running red lights, and who later fought with police officers, has been charged with multiple offenses, the Anchorage Police Department said in a written statement.

Charles A. Lampley Jr., 49, was arrested Thursday afternoon.

Online records show that Lampley has been charged with vehicle theft in the first degree, theft in the second degree, being a felon in possession of a weapon, reckless driving and assault in the fourth degree.

Police say that just after 2 p.m. on Thursday, dispatchers got a call about a man in a BMW running red lights and "driving approximately 100 mph" down Fifth Avenue. The man, later identified as Lampley, parked in front of Mammoth Music and got out of the car.

As officers responded, they started "giving Lampley verbal commands," which he ignored, police said.

Once another officer arrived, Lampley stopped and put his hands behind his back. "As the officers began the handcuffing process Lampley tensed up and began to pull away.  Lampley and the two officers went to the ground," police said.

Lampley tried to punch both officers. He then put his hand on one of the officers, "next to the officer's holstered weapon," police said.
