A Fairbanks man faces murder charges after allegedly shaking his infant child, causing severe swelling in the baby's brain.
James Jimieson, 22, was arrested Tuesday and charged with second-degree murder, the Fairbanks Police Department said in a written statement.
Police say that Jimieson had brought the infant into Fairbanks' local hospital on Friday, May 11. Jimieson told hospital staff the baby was unresponsive and wasn't eating.
A CAT scan showed the infant was suffering from "extensive bleeding and bruising of the brain," police said.
The infant was flown to Anchorage's Providence Medical Center the following day.
Meantime, Fairbanks detectives interviewed Jimieson. He told police several different versions of how the baby had been hurt, authorities said.
Jimieson first said that the baby had fallen or hit its head a couple of times. He later admitted to shaking the baby "out of frustration," police wrote.
As Jimieson shook the child, the baby's head hit his own head twice, Jimieson told police. After that, the baby stopped eating and its eyes appeared to be dilated, so he took the infant to the hospital.
Three days later, on May 15, the baby died in the Anchorage hospital.
"There were no signs of external trauma, but the autopsy revealed that the infant had six blunt force injuries on the forehead and had severe swelling of the brain," police said.
Jimieson was in custody at the Fairbanks Correctional Center Tuesday. His bail was set at $250,000, online records show.
