PALMER — A 48-year-old inmate at Goose Creek Correctional Center died last week at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, according to the Alaska Department of Corrections.

Douglas W. Artemie was housed at the prison since Aug. 19 and died Sept. 4, according to a notice Monday. He was serving a sentence for first-degree sexual assault, first-degree assault and other charges.

He was transported to the hospital at about 9:45 a.m. on Sept. 4 and died at 5:27 p.m. the same day, the notice states. Foul play is not believed to be a factor in his death.

The Alaska State Troopers and the Medical Examiner's Office review all prisoner deaths, corrections officials say. The agency's Professional Conduct Unit will also conduct an internal investigation. Department records are generally not subject to release because they contain confidential medical, security and personnel information.

A corrections spokeswoman did not respond to a request for more information.
