Man accused of running over roommate charged with manslaughter

A 27-year-old Anchorage man accused of running over his roommate  is now facing a manslaughter charge.

An Anchorage Grand Jury handed up an indictment for manslaughter charges against Corey Hoppe, 27, in the death of 24-year-old Erin Bailey.

"This case is now being treated as a homicide," the Anchorage Police Department said in a statement Wednesday.

Hoppe had previously been charged with failure to render aid at the scene of an accident. He has been held at the Anchorage jail since his arrest.

Prosecutors say Hoppe and Bailey were in a Chevrolet Suburban together on the afternoon of Oct. 13 when the Bailey either jumped or was pushed out at the intersection of Baxter Road and Northern Lights Boulevard.

Hoppe ran over Bailey before speeding off, and later told a police officer he hadn't stopped because he was low on gas, according to the charging document in the failure to render aid case against him.

In an obituary, Bailey's family described him as a gentle outdoorsman who loved "meaningful conversation, books, philosophy, science, God" and worked hard to provide for himself without help.

Bailey was a graduate of the Alaska Military Youth Academy and Dimond High School and worked as a landscaper, the obituary said.
