Police: Anchorage man faces charges after firing gun into the air over poker-game dispute

A 28-year-old Anchorage man faces multiple charges after robbing a poker game and firing multiple rounds into the air from his vehicle Saturday night, the Anchorage Police Department said Tuesday.

Amar O. Azzam was arrested after police responded to East Bluff Drive and Richardson Vista Road, on Government Hill north of downtown Anchorage, following reports of a weapon being fired. Police responded to the scene at 11:52 p.m.

Police located the suspect vehicle, a 2003 Blue Ford Explorer, at 16th Avenue and C Street.

“A female driver and male passenger were taken into custody from the 2003 Blue Ford Explorer,” police wrote in an alert. "After obtaining a search warrant ... officers located a handgun in the passenger side glove box.”

The investigation found that Azzam, who had been drinking, thought he’d been cheated during the poker game at an apartment on Richardson Vista Road, police said.

Azzam pulled out a handgun, demanded money and left the building with his girlfriend and the cash, police said.

“Once outside the two got into the Ford,” the police department said. “Azzam fired multiple shots in the air from the vehicle as they drove away.”

Azzam was arrested, jailed and charged with first-degree weapons misconduct and robbery, third-degree weapon misconduct involving a felon in possession and other charges.

“The female was not charged,” and there were no injuries, police said.
