Woman driving wildly with young son in car stopped, resists DUI arrest, Anchorage police say

A 31-year-old woman drove recklessly with her young son and dog in the car and refused to cooperate when officers finally pulled her over on the Anchorage Hillside, police said.

The Anchorage Police Department said in an alert that dispatchers began receiving “multiple calls" around 4:32 p.m. Monday about a green Subaru Forester nearly hitting other vehicles, swerving into oncoming traffic and onto the median and shoulder, and going in and out of lanes near the Old Seward Highway and DeArmoun Road.

One caller followed the Subaru from DeArmoun Road until officers arrived to stop it at Killey Street and Leyden Road, police said. Officers found Hannah J. Henderson, 31, driving with her elementary-school-aged son in the front seat with a dog.

Henderson wouldn’t cooperate when officers tried to give her field sobriety tests and refused to give officers the name of someone who could pick up the boy and dog, police said.

The boy’s father arrived at the scene after the boy gave officers his contact information.

Henderson was arrested and taken to the Anchorage jail, where she refused to stay seated or provide a breath sample, police said. After they got a warrant to draw a blood sample from Henderson, officers had to restrain her on a stretcher to do it.

Police said she tried to bite an officer who was holding her down. The officer wasn’t injured, police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said.

Henderson has been charged with driving under the influence, reckless endangerment, refusal to submit to a chemical test and resisting arrest.
