Bethel man charged with murder in death of 65-year-old

A 27-year-old Bethel man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of David Carl, who was found bleeding in a Bethel apartment Wednesday.

Kyle Kilongak was arrested Thursday and had bail set at $250,000 with a court-approved third-party custodian, according to a Friday statement from the Bethel Police Department.

David Carl, 65, was pronounced dead at the hospital in the Southwest Alaska city after a property manager found him at the apartment on Atsaq Street.

Bethel Police Chief Burke Waldron said the two men knew each other.

“Definitely alcohol was involved,” Waldron said. “We know by the condition of the suspect when he was contacted and the alcohol containers in residence and witness statements. There were people coming and going throughout the evening.”

He said an autopsy by the State Medical Examiner Office was expected to be completed soon to help determine the cause of death. Authorities had said Carl’s wounds appeared traumatic rather than from a knife or gun.
