Anchorage police have released the names of the three officers who fired on a man who pointed what police say was a realistic-looking BB gun at them.

The officers were Calvin Chinnis, who has been with the department for more than 13 years; Gabriel Brown, an APD officer for three years; and Michael Vang, who has been with the department for about a year and a half.

The suspect, 32-year-old Shakti Lewis, is facing three counts of third-degree assault after pointing a Crossman replica 1911 BB gun at nearby homes and people in Dave Rose Park, police said.

He was booked into the Anchorage Correctional Complex at 8:24 p.m. Tuesday after being released from the hospital.

Police Chief Justin Doll said officers spent three minutes commanding Lewis to drop the weapon and fired on him after he pointed the replica gun at them.

Lewis, who has no prior criminal record in Alaska, was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. A witness said Lewis was sitting up when paramedics arrived.
