Man charged with murder 9 months after fatal fight in East Anchorage

A grand jury indicted a 47-year-old man Wednesday on murder and manslaughter charges stemming from a November 2018 fight at an East Anchorage apartment complex that left another man dead, according to state prosecutors.

Jeffery Schubauer was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of 40-year-old Tupou Satini Jr., according to an alert Friday.

Late on the night of Nov. 8, police responding to reports of an injured man found Satini bleeding in the middle of East Eighth Avenue near Bragaw Street. Police have said Satini sustained those injuries in a fight at a nearby apartment complex that spilled out into the street.

Satini died from his injuries at a hospital the next day. At the time, several people were detained for questioning, but no arrests had been made.

According to police, Schubauer “is currently on felony probation in three other cases, including Kidnapping in the First Degree and Burglary in the First Degree." He is being held on a $200,000 cash only bond at the Anchorage Correctional Complex.

“If convicted at trial, Schubauer faces a sentence of up to 99 years imprisonment, a fine of $500,000, or both,” prosecutors said.

The case was one of seven homicides considered unsolved at the end of 2018.
