Juvenile vandals cause an estimated $15K in damage at Begich Middle School

Four Anchorage students were arrested Wednesday after causing thousands of dollars of damage to a one-room portable classroom at Begich Middle School in East Anchorage, police and a school official said.

The juvenile suspects tried to light a small fire inside the classroom, said Alan Brown Director of Communications and Community Outreach at Anchorage School District. According to a police alert, damage included a burned desk, holes in the classroom walls and broken lights. Fire extinguisher residue was also found throughout the classroom, police said.

“Our earliest estimate is about $15,000 in damage,” Brown said.

School Resource Officers investigated the vandalism and identified four male students who are alleged to be involved, none of whom attend Begich Middle School, police said.

The charges have been forwarded to the Division of Juvenile Justice, according to police.
