Man charged with attempted murder in shooting at downtown Anchorage bar

An Anchorage man entered a not guilty plea Thursday to numerous charges, including attempted murder, for an Oct. 26 shooting at the Gaslight Lounge that wounded an employee.

Officers were called to the Gaslight, 721 W. Fourth Ave., around 1:20 a.m. on Oct. 26. Police said Reynaldo Armstead, 27, was at the downtown bar when a fight broke out.

“One of the participants pulled out a handgun and began waving it around,” the initial alert from police said.

A bar employee, identified in the indictment as Gerald Montgomery, tried to break up the fight and was shot in the upper body, police said. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, police wrote.

Montgomery survived, but police had no updates on his condition Thursday.

Police said Armstead was arrested the next day on an outstanding felony warrant. He was indicted by a grand jury this week and appeared for arraignment Thursday in the Nesbett Courthouse.

Armstead faces up to 99 years in prison on attempted murder, the most severe charge, if he is convicted. The other charges are three counts of first-degree assault, one count of attempted first-degree assault, a count of second-degree assault, three counts of third-degree assault and one count of second-degree weapons misconduct. He is also facing three misdemeanor charges, including two weapons violations and reckless endangerment.

Bail was set at $100,000 for Armstead.
