Police: 2 bodies found in East Anchorage vehicle fire

Anchorage police are investigating two bodies found late Saturday inside a burning SUV in East Anchorage.

Authorities responded a little after 11 p.m. to reports of a burning SUV in the 200 block of Newell Street, police said in an online alert. The area is east of Boniface Parkway and just south of the Glenn Highway.

“Upon arrival an SUV was found fully engulfed while parked in a vacant lot; it appears there are two deceased individuals inside,” police wrote.

Few other details were available Sunday, and police said they were treating it as a suspicious death investigation. Police were asking anyone with information to call 311.

Two weeks ago, a body was found in a burning SUV in another area of East Anchorage, near Cheney Lake. In that case, Trevor Babcock, 42, was charged with murder and is accused of stabbing a woman to death inside a Cadillac Escalade before setting the vehicle on fire.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly described the location of Newell Street. It’s south of the Glenn Highway, not north.
