‘Prowler’ fleeing authorities in U-Med district fires shots into the air, police say

A man who fired shots into the air late Tuesday while fleeing Alaska Native Medical Center security guards was soon captured by officers from the nearby university campus, Anchorage police said in an online alert.

The man, later identified as Matthew D. Johnston, 23, was acting suspiciously in the hospital parking garage around 11 p.m. when a security guard approached him.

When Johnston pulled a handgun from his waistband, the guard backed away and called for help.

Johnston fled while security officers followed at a distance. When Johnston realized they were following him, he fired several shots into the air, according to police. No one was injured.

Anchorage Police Department officers set up a perimeter and University of Alaska Anchorage police officers helped search for Johnston. University officers radioed at 11:07 that they had found an individual who matched the suspect description at 40th Avenue and Wellness Street.

After identifying Johnston, Anchorage police arrested him on an outstanding warrant, took him to jail and charged him with assault and weapons misconduct.
