Anchorage man sentenced to federal prison for possession of child pornography

An Anchorage man was sentenced Wednesday to more than seven years in prison for possessing thousands of sexually explicit images of children, federal prosecutors said.

In December 2018, law enforcement linked 36-year-old Troy MacDermott’s IP address to a photo-sharing and messaging app through which he was uploading child pornography, according to a statement from the Alaska U.S. Attorney’s Office.

When investigators searched MacDermott’s phone and computer, they found more than 33,300 photos and 800 videos of child pornography, the statement said. Some of the videos showed children under age 12.

MacDermott was sentenced in federal court to spend 7 years and 3 months in prison, followed by 40 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $42,000 in restitution to victims.
