Anchorage police arrest suspect in Spenard shooting

Anchorage police have arrested an injured man who they say shot another man during a fight Wednesday in the Spenard neighborhood.

The suspected shooter, identified as 25-year-old Faamitai Falani, turned himself in to authorities and was arrested Thursday afternoon, police said in a statement. Falani now faces three different assault charges and charges of reckless endangerment and evidence tampering, police said.

Police said that Falani and another man were arguing around 5:40 p.m. on the 1000 block of Chugach Way when Falani assaulted the other man.

“The victim returned a strike to the back of the suspect’s head with a glass bottle,” police wrote in a statement Thursday morning.

Falani then shot the other man “in the upper body” and drove away in a silver Dodge minivan, police said. Falani was bleeding from the head, officers said.

The victim was taken to the hospital with what police called life-threatening wounds. He survived the night, but police did not provide any additional details on the man’s injuries Thursday afternoon.

Before Falani turned himself in, officers were searching for the shooter Thursday morning.
