An 18-year-old was arrested Tuesday afternoon outside a Midtown Anchorage elementary school for having a handgun on school property, police said.
A school staff member called police because a person with a gun had been seen on the basketball court outside Northern Lights ABC Elementary School just after 1:30 p.m., the Anchorage Police Department wrote in an online statement. The school did not have students present because the district is operating through distance learning during the pandemic.
A school resource officer saw three teenagers on the playground and approached them, police said. The officer heard the group talking about a gun. Police found a handgun with a missing serial number among Kavien J. Rhodes' belongings, the statement said.
Rhodes was charged with three counts of misconduct involving a weapon. State law prohibits people from carrying a deadly weapon on school grounds at any time.
One of the two juvenile teens was arrested on an outstanding warrant and taken to the McLaughlin Youth Center, police said.
