Utqiagvik man faces murder charge in fatal stabbing

An Utqiagvik man is facing a charge of second-degree murder related to a fatal stabbing early Tuesday.

North Slope Borough police were called to a home on Momeganna Street near the intersection with Kongek Street just after 3 a.m. because a caller had reported someone knocking on her door, according to a statement of probable cause filed Wednesday.

Police found 32-year-old Floyd Sovalik Jr. bleeding and unresponsive in the area, the document said, and he had a puncture wound near the base of his neck

Officers followed a trail of blood to a nearby home on Kongek Street and saw a bloody knife on the floor, the charges said. After interviews with five people inside, police determined Randy Peters had gotten into a fight with Sovalik and eventually stabbed him, the statement said.

Peters, 43, was arrested Tuesday and is being held on $500,000 bail.
