Utqiagvik man charged with murder in beating death

An Utqiagvik man beat another man to death Friday night, according to charges filed against him.

North Slope Borough police officers were called to an Utqiagvik home just before 10 p.m. Friday and found Robert James Simmonds unresponsive in the entryway, according to a probable cause statement signed by Patrol Sergeant Randy Smith.

Someone at the scene told police 36-year-old Cody Wright had beat Simmonds, the statement said. When police made contact with Wright, he had blood on his hands and clothing, Smith wrote. Wright was upset with Simmonds because he had sex with Wright’s wife, the statement said.

Officers and medical first responders tried to revive Simmonds, but he was pronounced dead, the charges said.

Wright is facing a charge of second-degree murder and manslaughter.
