Anchorage man missing since 2016 declared homicide victim after remains found in Turnagain Pass

Human remains recovered from Turnagain Pass last summer were identified early this year as an Anchorage man who had been missing since 2016, police said.

Detectives are now investigating the case as a homicide.

Jose G. Gonzalez, 46, was reported missing by his coworkers on July 16, 2016, when he didn’t show up for work, Anchorage police said.

“An investigation was conducted; efforts to locate Jose were unsuccessful,” police wrote. “APD detectives were assigned to the case shortly thereafter and they continued the investigation patrol had started.”

Alaska State Troopers recovered human remains in the pass last summer, and police said they were identified as Gonzalez early this year. Police did not immediately say what prompted them to declare the case a homicide investigation nor provide additional details about the circumstances of the disappearance or death.

No arrests have been made.

Police asked anyone with information about Gonzalez’s death to contact Detective Brett Sarber at 907-786-2651 or brett.sarber@anchorageak.gov. Anonymous tips are accepted online.
