A 37-year-old man was convicted of second-degree murder last week in the shooting death of his wife at their East Anchorage home in 2019.
An Anchorage jury on Thursday found Chue Yang not guilty of first-degree murder and a count of second-degree murder while intending serious injury but convicted him on a count of second-degree murder with extreme indifference. Yang is scheduled for sentencing in May.
Prosecutors said the couple was involved in a violent relationship after Yang was arrested following the November 2019 shooting. Yang contended he was showing his wife how to use the gun when it went off.
The shooting occurred at the couple’s home on Klevin Street. Yang told detectives they had been at a party together earlier in the evening and Xiong came home before he did, according to court documents filed in the case. The documents indicated Xiong was shot in the head while lying in bed. There were at least two children in the home at the time, prosecutors have said.
