3 Mat-Su schools close Monday due to positive COVID-19 cases

Three Matanuska-Susitna Borough schools closed Monday due to positive COVID-19 cases. The district also extended the closures of three high schools.

Big Lake Elementary, Fronteras Spanish Immersion Charter School and Houston Junior Senior High School each confirmed a positive case of COVID-19 on Monday, according to district data. The schools closed for an early dismissal Monday and will remain closed through Tuesday, according to a district announcement.

There will be an update on the closures Tuesday evening, spokeswoman Jillian Morrissey said in the announcement.

The district’s health advisory team has extended closures at Career & Tech High School, Colony High School and Wasilla High School through Friday.

The school district said that the borough is in a “high risk” zone for COVID-19 spread and is experiencing an increase in confirmed cases.

“This is mirrored in our schools as we are being notified of more positive cases in our school communities,” Morrissey said in the announcement. “Now more than ever, we need the Mat-Su community to support keeping schools and activities open by doubling efforts to prevent community spread of COVID-19.”
