Fairbanks hospital operator warns of cyberattack on patient data

FAIRBANKS — A cyberattack on the company that operates Fairbanks Memorial Hospital has placed the private information of an unknown number of patients, doctors and health care providers in Alaska at risk, Arizona-based Banner Health said Wednesday.

Banner said "the cyber attackers may have gained unauthorized access to patient information, health plan member and beneficiary information, as well as information about physician and health care providers."

About 3.7 million people at dozens of Banner facilities in seven states may have had personal information stolen, it said.

Names, addresses, birth dates, claims information, doctors'  names and possibly health insurance information and Social Security numbers may have been disclosed.

The company said it discovered on July 7 that hackers had gained unauthorized access to computer systems that process payment card data in cafeterias in some of its facilities. This affects about 19,000 card holders in seven states, a company official said.

On July 13, a far larger potential breach was discovered, potentially affecting millions of people who do business at Banner facilities. That attack began June 17.

Banner said it is "working to enhance the security of its systems in order to help prevent this from happening in the future."
