Fatal structure fire in Two Rivers was possible suicide, troopers say

A person died in a structure fire early Friday morning in what Alaska State Troopers are calling a possible suicide in the Interior community of Two Rivers.

Around 5 a.m., troopers were alerted to a fire at a residence on Breeze Road in Two Rivers, in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. A body was found in the debris, troopers wrote in an online dispatch.

"There were suicide notes outside of the structure," said Megan Peters, troopers spokeswoman. Around the time of the fire, troopers got a call asking for a welfare check at the same residence.

The presumed next of kin has been notified, Peters said. An autopsy will be conducted, "mostly to make sure everything is as it seems," she said.

The residence was outside the fire service area. Peters wasn't sure whether the structure was a house, cabin or other type of dwelling.

Steve Crouch, fire chief at North Star Volunteer Fire Department in Fairbanks, said firefighters were called to the scene around 6:30 a.m. to spray water on the structure and cool hot spots so troopers could investigate.
