Van bursts into flames at mouth of Kenai River

No one was injured when a camper van erupted in flames late Thursday on the south beach of the Kenai River in Kenai.

The van’s engine apparently overheated and caught fire, said John Harris, captain with the Kenai Fire Department. Firefighters were called at 10:18 p.m. The fire was mostly extinguished about 30 minutes later.

The van was fully ablaze when police and firefighters arrived. By 11 p.m., the smoking shell of the van was sitting on the beach, not far from fishing tents.

No one was in the vehicle when the fire broke out. The van had spent most of the day stuck in the sand, Harris said.
