Kenai Peninsula Borough crews have started repairing roads near Seward that flooded after two storm systems drenched the Peninsula this month.
Work began Tuesday on borough-maintained roads outside of Seward following an assessment of flood damage Monday, the Peninsula Clarion reported.
The first storm system hit the Alaska port city on Oct. 12, depositing about 2 inches of rain. The second system rolled in on Oct. 15, dropping another 5 inches over three days, said Rebecca Anderson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Anchorage Forecast Office.
"That was the one that really brought a lot of that flooding to that area," Anderson said.
Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce declared a state of emergency last week after rainfall, storm water and debris damaged some roads, bridges and public facilities.
Most of the work will be on the Bruno Road and Forest Lane areas, said Dan Nelson, emergency manager for the borough
"It started yesterday afternoon and will be continuing through the rest of the week," Nelson said Tuesday. "We're working to repair roads and getting them back to a permanent state, getting gravel that was stockpiled moved and just generally getting things back to normal."
