Sutton man killed when pickups collide on Glenn Highway

A Sutton man died in a Glenn Highway collision between two pickups late Thursday that closed the road for more than an hour.

Alaska State Troopers responded shortly after 11 p.m. to the Mile 52 crash, involving 50-year-old Keven Johnson of Sutton and Wasilla resident Thomas Pelfrey, 57.

"Investigation found a southbound pickup driven by (Johnson) crossed the center line, striking a northbound pickup driven by (Pelfrey)," troopers wrote in a Friday dispatch on the crash. "Pelfrey was transported to the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center with minor injury. Johnson was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email that Johnson's 1991 Chevrolet Silverado and Pelfrey's 1997 Ford F250 were traveling at "highway speeds or greater" when they collided head-on. Pelfrey had one passenger, who also received minor injuries.

"Johnson was not wearing a seat belt," Peters wrote.

Johnson's next of kin have been notified, troopers said. The collision remains under investigation.
