One dead, one hospitalized in Mat-Su house fire

One person died and another was hospitalized in a house fire in the Butte area of the Matanuska-Susitna Borough on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Calls began coming in at 12:16 p.m. about the fire, at a single-family home about two miles down East Knik River Road, said Ken Barkley, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough's deputy director of emergency services.

The house was "fully engulfed in flames," when firefighters from the Butte, Palmer and Central Mat-Su departments arrived.

A man who was outside the house when firefighters arrived was taken to an area hospital, Barkley said.

A person inside the house was dead, according to Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters. Barkley said the person — who was initially considered missing — was a woman.

Both victims are believed to be adults, Barkley said.

"The person who was injured was unable to get the other person out of the house," Peters said.

Officials have not released their names or the exact address of the home.

The fire was under control within 30 minutes of the time firefighters arrived, Barkley said. A car repair business also on the property was not damaged in the fire, he said.

As of 4 p.m., the fire was out and the scene had been turned over to investigators with the Alaska State Troopers.
