Snowmachiner dies in crash in Talkeetna Mountains

A Wasilla 19-year-old died Sunday afternoon in a snowmachine crash as he was riding with friends in the Talkeetna Mountains, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said Jacob Harris had been riding with two other people, and other snowmachiners were in the area, but the fatal wreck "was not witnessed, from what we can tell."

"Multiple people located him in quick succession," Peters said. "About seven riders were on scene."

Troopers said they were informed of the wreck, off Yoder Road southeast of Talkeetna, at about 3:20 p.m. Sunday.

"It was reported that (Harris) had been found underneath his idling snowmachine near a steep embankment and was unresponsive," troopers said. "Weather conditions were poor at the scene and the visibility was down to less than one hundred feet."

Troopers, Matanuska-Susitna Borough rescue personnel and a privately owned helicopter carrying a family member of Harris all responded.

Ken Barkley, the Mat-Su Borough's deputy director of emergency services, said responders traveled more than 7 miles from Yoder Road to reach the crash site.

"CPR was applied on location, but not successfully," Barkley said.

Next of kin for Harris have been notified, according to troopers. His body will undergo an autopsy at the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage.
