Repaving planned for Glenn Highway from Eklutna to Parks Highway

The Glenn Highway will be repaved next summer from Eklutna to the Parks Highway interchange near Wasilla.

The 8-mile section ferries a steady stream of traffic from the Matanuska Valley to Anchorage. About a third of workers in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough commute to the city. Traffic counts indicate just over 32,000 vehicles pass Eklutna in both directions every day.

The project is the third in a series of Glenn Highway repaving projects that began with sections from Airport Heights in Anchorage to the Eklutna exit, according to Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities spokeswoman Shannon McCarthy. That work was finished this summer and cost about $20 million.

Federal funds are paying for the next project, expected to cost $5 million to $10 million. The state is advertising the job now. Bids are due Nov. 22.

The upcoming work will repave northbound and southbound lanes of the highway, as well as ramps.

The job is expected to start in spring and finish by Aug. 1.
