2 hurt in Butte house fire

PALMER — A fire early Wednesday in a Butte log home injured two people, including one who jumped out of a window to escape.

The victims were treated at a hospital for injuries described as not life-threatening, according to Ken Barkley, fire deputy director for Matanuska-Susitna Borough emergency services.

One person leaped from a window above the main level to escape the flames, Barkley said. The second person was able to walk out of the house but was injured slipping on ice.

The fire was reported around 8:30 a.m. The small home, visible off North Vista Drive, was a total loss. Fire crews remained at the scene through the morning.

Multiple borough units from Butte, as well as Palmer city fire and rescue crews, responded to the fire. The road is on Lazy Mountain, off Clark Road. A Butte fire station is nearby.

Palmer and Butte responders arrived within minutes of receiving a call about the fire from a neighbor, Barkley said.

Red Cross volunteers met with the two adult victims — one male, one female — at the hospital, according to a spokeswoman for the Alaska region of American Red Cross. The organization is providing financial assistance for lodging and immediate needs.
