Man killed in wreck at busy Parks Highway interchange near Wasilla

PALMER -- An Eagle River man was killed and a 1-year-old was hurt in a single-vehicle accident on the Parks Highway near Wasilla just after noon Monday.

Alaska State Troopers said that Joshua Cooper, 26, became trapped when his 2004 Chevrolet pickup truck left the roadway and struck the Trunk Road overpass supports. The Central Mat-Su Fire Department crews extricated him, according to Ken Barkley, deputy director for the borough emergency services department.

Cooper and his infant child were both transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, where Cooper died. The child was in a car seat and received injuries described as not life-threatening.

The accident occurred at the interchange where the Parks and Glenn highways come together.

The southbound Parks Highway in the area of Trunk Road was closed early Monday afternoon while Alaska State Troopers investigated the accident, troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain said. Traffic was being routed around the highway at Trunk.
