Mat-Su fire officials investigate ‘suspicious fire’ at abandoned Wasilla building

A “suspicious fire” at an abandoned structure in Wasilla was quickly brought under control Wednesday afternoon, according to a Matanuska-Susitna Borough official.

At around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters from multiple departments responded to the fire at a building on the 4800 block of West Machen Road, according to Ken Barkley, Mat-Su emergency services director.

The fire is being considered “suspicious” because vehicles that should not have been there were on site, Barkley said. The Central Mat-Su Fire Department is investigating the fire, he said.

One firefighter sustained a possible finger injury and was transported to a hospital, Barkley said. He added that West Lakes Fire Department, Houston Fire Department and Palmer Fire and Rescue also responded to the fire.
