Fairbanks man drowns after flipping canoe near Big Lake

A 30-year-old man drowned Saturday in Diamond Lake in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough after his canoe overturned, troopers said.

It’s unclear why Arthur Analoak’s canoe flipped, but troopers wrote in an online statement that he was not wearing a personal flotation device. Troopers were called to the area around 7 p.m.

The Mat-Su Dive Team was called to Diamond Lake Sunday to recover Analoak’s body, troopers said. Foul play is not expected but, troopers said Analoak’s body will undergo an autopsy at the State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Diamond Lake is roughly 3 miles southwest of Big Lake.
