Firefighters contain apartment fire off Palmer-Wasilla Highway; several residents displaced

A fire that blazed at an apartment building off the Palmer-Wasilla Highway was contained by Saturday evening, but not before displacing several residents, according to authorities.

The fire was reported around 4 p.m. at Creekwood Park Apartments on Creekwood Park Circle, near the Three Bears location along the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, said Ken Barkley, emergency services director with the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.

The Central Mat-Su and Palmer Fire Departments responded to the scene and rescued several people from apartments, Barkley said. No injuries were reported, and “very little” spread beyond the building structure occurred, he said.

The fire caused the highway to be partially blocked as of Saturday around 5 p.m., Palmer Fire & Rescue said in a social media post.

High temperatures and dry conditions in the weekend forecast prompted warnings of increased fire danger through the Memorial Day weekend for Anchorage, Mat-Su and parts of the Kenai Peninsula.

Those conditions combined to make it easier for wildland fires in grass, brush or trees to ignite and spread rapidly, forecasters say.
