Two drivers killed in weekend crash near Wasilla

Two people died of injuries suffered in a three-vehicle crash early Sunday near Wasilla, Alaska State Troopers say.

Wasilla resident Katheryne Murray, 33, died during surgery on Sunday, according to a troopers spokesman and an update Tuesday.

Another driver, 58-year-old Rachel Stinson of Anchorage, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, troopers said.

Troopers and Wasilla police responded shortly after midnight to the crash on the Parks Highway near Lamont Lane west of Wasilla, in the Meadow Lakes area. The driver of a white sedan traveling southbound lost control and hit a maroon sedan also traveling southbound, troopers said Sunday. Stinson, who was driving the maroon sedan, crossed into the opposite lane and struck a white hatchback head-on.

Murray, who was driving the hatchback and suffered serious injuries, was airlifted to an Anchorage hospital. The person who was driving the white sedan, who has not been identified, was transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.

An investigation continues.
