Troopers: Snowmachine crash kills Emmonak man

An Emmonak man died Saturday after a snowmachine crash near the Yukon River village, Alaska State Troopers said.

The wreck that killed 54-year-old Martin Moore Jr. during a two-man outing to nearby Middle Mouth was reported to troopers Saturday, according to an online dispatch. Moore suffered head and back injuries in the wreck.

Emmonak's search and rescue group and Grant Aviation employees assisted troopers in finding the men and dropping supplies to them. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter later picked them up and flew them to Nome.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email that Moore was hospitalized in Nome but died just before 9 p.m. Saturday.

"The men were reportedly hunting for birds," Peters wrote. "(Moore) was not wearing a helmet."

The wreck is being investigated by troopers. Moore's family has been notified, and his body will undergo an autopsy at the State Medical Examiner Office in Anchorage.
